Saban's Power Rangers In cinemas March 24

Quest for the 6th Power Ranger

Everyday superhero is our sixth Power Ranger

Superhero Gerri

The Sun and Lionsgate’s competition to find a hero worthy of being the sixth Power Ranger uncovered more superheroes than turn up in any comic book.

Our final shortlist included a full-time carer who also volunteers to assist the elderly and an Army Cadet who’s overcome serious learning difficulties to help others succeed and was described as “not just a Power Ranger but a Megazord.”

Who could compete with such superhuman powers? Our winner may not be a Megazord but she has certainly been doing her bit to tackle the rising homelessness problem in Belfast.

Retired nurse Gerri was nominated by her daughter, who explains: “Every Tuesday night without fail mum goes into the city centre to help the homeless. She brings clothes, hot food, sandwiches, tea and coffee.”

It was reported last year that homelessness in Northern Ireland has doubled since 2000.

But despite the pain Gerri suffers from severe arthritis and fibromyalgia, she never misses a day. Gerri has been rewarded with a family trip for four to Hollywood to the USA and a mega-tech bundle!

Her efforts impressed our judges, including Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, Steve White – who has received three commendations for courage and leadership – and Sun film critic Jamie East.

Steve says: “Homelessness affects people in all walks of life and can potentially happen to anyone.

“What Gerri is doing, selflessly going out to help people and literally saving lives, is highly commendable. She is a deserving winner of this award.”

Jamie says: “Every stranger needs a Power Ranger – and Gerri is a winner in every respect.”

Power Rangers is in cinemas now.
